Course Name: Obstetrics and Gynaecology senior posting

Course Code: MM50310, MM30409

Course Synopsis: This module reinforces the student's knowledge, clinical skills towards a competent house officer in obstetrics and gynecology field.

Course learning outcome

1) Students will be able to apply the management based on analysis of provisional and differential diagnoses of common obstetrics and gynecology conditions.

2) Students will be able to explain the underlying pathophysiology to clinical features of medical disorders of pregnancy, normal and abnormal pregnancy, labour, puerperium and gynecology conditions.

Brief description of experiences / presentation submitted:

During MCO time, there was a difficulty to teach the students especially this module, which is clinical module and it needs hands-on training on patients and mannequins. However we tried the best we can by continuing online teaching sessions with students via google meet, zoom. As we need the patients for the students to take history from, I put myself as the patient. Therefore bed side clinical teaching at hospital became online teaching with the lecturer who acted as role player and lecturer. We found this method has better benefits in some extents. For theory teaching, we continue online powerpoint submissions in smart2ums for small group discussion, lectures, assessments. For Clinical Skill Lab training, I posted video in the smart2ums so students learn the procedures from the videos. However students manage to do hands-on training after they come back to UMS after MCO period.

Lecturer's activity

  1. Clinical skills lab for training of procedure for obstetrics and gynaecology

Device and Application Tools used

  1. Camera to take video

  2. Mannequins

  3. Instruments to demonstrate the procedure

The title for the first video is active management of third stage of labour. This procedure is compulsory for students to perform well during normal delivery of the foetus in hospital when they become a house officer.

The title of second video is manual removal of placenta which is also important for future house officer.

Third video is uterine inversion which is good to know topic for hands-on training but it is essential for theory knowledge.

Fourth video is stages of labour which is essential for students to understand for the sake of delivering the foetus.
